Why stay in Uluwatu

Uluwatu, on the southern Bukit Peninsula, is Bali at its most dramatic — limestone cliffs dropping to turquoise water, hidden beaches at the bottom of steep stairways, world-class surf breaks and some of the island's most spectacular clifftop resorts.

It's more remote and quieter than the Seminyak–Canggu strip. You come here for the views, the surf and the sense of escape, not for walkable nightlife.

Where to stay within Uluwatu

• Uluwatu / Pecatu: Near the famous temple and surf breaks; clifftop luxury and surf lodges.
• Bingin & Padang Padang: Legendary beaches and laid-back surf stays down the cliffs.
• Nusa Dua side of the Bukit: Calmer beaches and big resorts if you want the peninsula with easier swimming.

What it costs

Uluwatu is where Bali's showpiece luxury resorts sit, but there's a strong budget surf-lodge scene too. It's a place of extremes — clifftop five-stars and simple beach warungs, not much in the middle.

Good to know

• You'll want a car or scooter — things are spread out and the airport is 40+ minutes away.
• Many beaches involve steep stairs; check access if that matters to you.
• Book a room or villa with an ocean view — the clifftop setting is the reason to be here.
