Canggu is Bali's surf-and-laptop hub — a stretch of black-sand beaches, rice fields, cafés and co-working spaces that's become the island's most popular base for younger travellers and digital nomads.

It's more relaxed and spread-out than Seminyak, with a strong café and social scene, good surf for all levels, and a steady stream of new boutique hotels and guesthouses.

Where to stay within Canggu

• Batu Bolong: The central strip — cafés, surf shops and the main beach. Most walkable, most social.
• Berawa: Home to the big beach clubs and newer developments; good for a stylish stay.
• Pererenan: Quieter and more residential, popular with longer-stay visitors who want calm.

What it costs

Canggu skews mid-range and great value. Stylish guesthouses and small boutique hotels dominate, with private villas easy to find for groups and longer stays.

Good to know

• Traffic on the narrow lanes can be heavy, especially around Batu Bolong.
• The beaches are dramatic (black sand, good surf) rather than calm swimming beaches.
