Bali on a Budget: Where to Stay for Less
How to find great-value hotels and villas in Bali without staying somewhere grim β areas, timing and booking tips.
Bali has a reputation as a cheap destination, and it can be β but the difference between a great-value trip and an overpriced one usually comes down to where and when you book, not how much you spend.
Pick the right area
Your area choice drives your budget more than anything else.
- Best value beach areas: Sanur and parts of Canggu offer comfortable, well-run hotels for noticeably less than Seminyak or Nusa Dua.
- Best value inland: Ubud guesthouses and pool villas can be excellent value, especially a short ride from the centre.
- Where prices climb: Seminyak, Nusa Dua and clifftop Uluwatu carry a premium.
Travel in shoulder or wet season
Rates drop significantly outside JulyβAugust and the Christmas/New Year peak. February and November give you lower prices and fewer crowds, with plenty of sunshine.
Villas can beat hotels for groups
For families or friends travelling together, a private villa with a pool often works out cheaper per person than separate hotel rooms β and you get a kitchen and living space too.
Simple ways to save
- Book a few weeks ahead, not months, in shoulder season β but book early for peak dates.
- Stay a little back from the beach. A 5β10 minute walk to the sand can cut the price sharply.
- Longer stays often unlock better nightly rates at guesthouses and villas.
- Compare total prices including taxes and fees before you commit.
Putting it together
A great-value Bali trip usually looks like: a well-rated guesthouse or villa in Sanur, Canggu or Ubud, booked for shoulder-season dates, a short walk from the main strip. Compare options and prices on Booking.com to find your best rate.
